This Mess Won’t Fix Itself: COMICS INDUSTRY

ONLINE ROUNDTABLE

In this third and final discussion event we’ll be stepping back to evaluate the entire COMICS INDUSTRY. Which parts of this machine need recalibrating? What bottlenecks might be hindering growth? How can we improve that pipeline between audiences and creators? Are we finally gaining traction in the wider social acceptance of comics? And what, if there were no limits to our ambitions, would an ideal future for the comics scene look like?

This Mess Won’t Fix Itself: COMICS LIVELIHOODS

ONLINE ROUNDTABLE

In this second discussion we will be tucking into the meaty subject of COMICS LIVELIHOODS: which sources are we earning our income from? What does fair pay mean? What is the value of intellectual property? Does art have to be commodified in order to exist? What is the difference between a career and a hobby, or – god help us – a “side hustle”?

This Mess Won’t Fix Itself: COMICS CREATORS

ONLINE ROUNDTABLE

This first discussion event is open to everyone working in and with comics in the UK, and will focus specifically on the needs of the creators themselves: on wellbeing, on training, on confidence and community-building, and on inclusion.

A much-needed opportunity to shape the necessary improvements together: to take the recommendations of the UK Comics Creators Research Report and make them stick.

Ahead of the launch of the official report, join Hannah Berry as she shares a first look at some of the initial insights and discusses them (or possibly rants about them) with panelists Dapo Adeola, Faye Stacey and Mark Bradley.

The survey of 2020 gave us some pretty sobering results about the challenges being faced by people making comics in the UK, but what’s changed in the last five years? How much has the cost of living crisis affected creators? Has AI had an impact? What about Brexit? As a group, are we getting wealthier? More community-spirited? Queerer?
